Workstation role and effect

Steel Knife is the second manual peeling upgrade at the kitchen station, stepping in as a better hand tool after you finish the early Rusty Knife objective. It keeps the focus on direct blade work at the cutting board and water tray before the shift transitions into mechanical drums.

Players working toward hand-peeling achievements rely on the counter blade long after basic machines unlock. Both Old School (500 potatoes peeled by hand) and These Hands Were Made for Peeling (1,000 potatoes peeled by hand) count manual counter work rather than drum output.

Cost tier and table position

Steel Knife carries a printed cost of 2.70 (numeric value 2.7) and occupies sequence row 2 of 9 in the upgrade table. That places it nine times higher than the 0.30 Rusty Knife just before it, while still costing less than a quarter of the 12-unit Kitchen Table at row 3.

In both table sequence order and ascending price order, Steel Knife is the final sub-10 currency purchase before workbench and machine upgrades begin.

Shift handling and hotfix notes

At the counter, peeled potatoes drop into the water channel, which Hotfix 1.0.2 tuned so the final two speed tiers run slightly faster without late-game slowdowns. Auto Rotate also had its description aligned with its actual control binding in Hotfix 1.0.1.

Keep watching the pile for the key potato while working with the Steel Knife: neither the potato vacuum nor the puppy can pick up the key potato, so it always waits for a manual hand pickup.
